The body shows strength
- A long green body: buyers were in control the whole time.
- A tiny body: the price ended about where it started. Neither side won.
- A long red body: sellers were in control.
The wicks show the fight
- Sellers pushed the price far down, then buyers pushed it all the way back. A long lower wick says buyers stepped in.
- Buyers pushed the price far up, then sellers pushed it back. A long upper wick says sellers stepped in.
A timeframe is the size of a candle
FOUR 15 MINUTE CANDLES
ONE 1 HOUR CANDLE
Same market, different story
1 HOUR: FALLING
1 DAY: RISING
Two prices, and the gap between them
0.40
Watch out. A candle describes the past. A big green candle does not mean the next one will be green: it only tells you who was stronger while it formed.
New words in this lesson
- Candle
- One period of price, drawn as a body and two wicks.Like: one day's weather summary: the morning, the evening, the hottest and the coldest moment.
- Open and close
- The first and the last price of the candle.Like: the temperature when you woke up and when you went to bed.
- High and low
- The highest and the lowest price reached during the candle.Like: the hottest and the coldest moment of the day.
- Body
- The thick part, from open to close. Long means a strong move.Like: how far you actually walked, start to finish.
- Wick
- The thin line: a price that was reached, then pushed back.Like: a wave running up the beach and sliding back.
- Timeframe
- How much time one candle covers: 5m, 1h, 4h, 1d.Like: a map: street view is 5 minutes, the whole city is 1 day.
- Spread
- The gap between the buy and the sell price. A cost on every trade.Like: a money exchange booth that buys dollars at one rate and sells at a slightly higher one.
